4 Steps to the Perfect Ballet High Bun
Just 4 Steps to the Perfect Ballet High Bun! Your dancer’s dance recital is coming up, and you have yet to perfect that high bun.. Don’t stress! Let’s dive right in! DO make sure to slick the hair, unlike the quick version in our images below.

- Split the front hair from the back! Miss Shaunie used to have the absolute hardest time keeping her daughter’s thick hair all together as she tried brushing it to a high pony. Forget that! Take the pick end of a fine tooth comb from ear to ear across the crown of the head. You should make the split right about to point where the high bun should be. Clip the front hair out of the way while you brush the back half up to a high pony right next to the part.
- Next up, brush the front section of the hair up to the part and combine it to the pony from the back half. Use another hair tie to go around all of the hair (around the original ponytail).
- There are TWO options for step three: You can twist the hair then twist it around and around the base of the ponytail. Tuck the end of the hair into the hair tie. OR use a hair donut. Pull all that hair through the donut. You’ll then proceed to cover the entire donut with the hair from the top to the bottom. Wind the hair around the donut while making sure to keep the donut completely covered with hair.
- Last, but not least, use a hair net! Many of our teachers used hair nets to get the perfect dance bun when they were growing up. The concept hasn’t changed! Hair nets to be the easiest way to keep hair in a flawless bun with no flyaways. Put the hair net around the twisted hair, twist it like a pony tail, and wrap it around again. You should be able to twist and cover the entire bun about three times, depending on the amount of hair your dancer has. Once the hair net is in place (don’t let go!), secure bobby pins around the entire base pushing inward to secure to the head. Make sure to push it through both the hair net and the bun hair into the hair below.
There are your four tried and true steps! And don’t forget to HAIR SPRAY!! We will always have more hair spray on hand, but the more, the better.
